Drugim najlepiej mi znanym miasteczkiem na poludniu Niemiec jest Biberach an der Riss. Jezdzimy tam co najmniej raz w tygodniu, zeby spedzic czas z corka babci i jej rodzina. Biberach jest wieksze od Munderkingen i jest to mila odmiana, przynajmnieej moge sie tam czuc anonimowa. Przez miasto przeplywa mala rzeka Riss, nad brzegami ktorej podobno wciaz zyja bobry - miasto wzielo od nich swoja nazwe. Nad rzeka sa piekne trasy do spacerow, w tym moja ulubiona, zrobiona z kamieni prowadzacych przez srodek rzeki. 

Teraz kojarzone jest jednak z innym zwierzeciem, w  samym centrum rynku stoi rzezba osla,  stworzona przez kontrowersyjnego artyste - Petera Lenk'a. Biberach jest miejscem utozsamianym z bardzo wybitnym niemieckim poeta epoki oswiecenia Christopherem Martinem Wielandem, ktory oprocz wlasnej tworczosci zapisal sie w pamieci jako pierwszy tlumacz Szekpira na niemiecki, przetlumaczyl 22 sztuki tego dramaturga. Wieland napisal satyrczne opowiadanie o obywatelach greckiej Abderry, ktorzy doprowadzili do sklocenia i podzialu miasta na skutek blahej klotni dwoch mezczyzn o prawa wlasnosci do cienia osla. Rzezba w srodku miasta wywolala poczatkowo emocje podobne tym w opowiadaniu pisarza, teraz jednak jest popularnym miejscem spotkan mieszkancow i w sloneczne dni rzuca wspanialy cien.

Historia sporu o cien osla byla czesto wykorzystywana prze pisarzy i dramaturgow, a wywodzi sie z bajki Ezopa. W owej bajce mezczyzna wynajal osla, zeby przebyc droge z Aten do Megary. Wsrodku dnia, kiedy zrobilo sie niemilosiernie goraco postanowil odpoczac w jego cieniu, co nie spodobalo sie wlascicielowi zwierzecia. Twierdzil, ze wynajl tylko osla, nie jego cien. Podczas sporu obu stron, osiol skorzystal z nieuwagi mezczyzn i wybral wolnosc. Swietna puenta autorstwa Konstantego Ildefonsa Galczynskiego:

The second town I know best in South Germany in Biberach an der Riss, where we go at least once a week to spend some time with Granny's daughter and her family. Biberach is larger than Munderkingen which makes a nice change, at least I can be anonymous here. Through the city flows a small river Riss, on the banks of which reportedly still live beavers - the town got its name from them. By the river are beautiful trails for walks, including my favorite, made from stones leading through the center of the river.

The town is now associated with another animal - donkey. Donkey's sculpture  was created by controversial artist Peter Lenk and can be seen  in Market Square. 

Biberach is a place identified with the very eminent German Enlightenment writer Christopher Martin Wieland, who in addition to his own work is remembered as the first Shakespeare's interpreter for German, translated the 22 pieces of the playwright. Wieland wrote satirical story about the citizens of Greek Abderra who divided  as a result of trivial quarrel of  two men about the ownership of donkey's shadow. The sculpture in the middle of the city initially sparked similar excitement but now it is well integrated feature in town, a popular meeting place for locals and on sunny days casts a wonderful shadow.

The story of donkey's shadow was often used by writers, it origins from one of  Aesop's fables. In that tale "The Ass and his shadow" a man hired donkey to travel from Athens to Megara. In the middle of the day when sun was too strong he  decided to rest in its shade The owner of an animal said that the only thing he rented was the donkey, shadow is extra. The donkey took advantage of fierce dispute and run away choosing freedom. Great punch line by Konstanty Ildefons Gałczyńskiego (sorry- rhymes only in Polish):

Metzelsuppe

W niedziele zabrano mnie do piekla wegetarianina, a ja sie dalam nie zrozumiawszy o co chodzi. Moja babcinka zapowiedziala, ze wychodzimy w niedziele na obiad i sprobuje czegos nowego. Okazalo sie, ze jedziemy do wioski obok, gdzie odbywa sie wlasnie radosne zgromadzenie pod nazwa "Metzelsuppe". W poludniowych regionach Niemiec, w okresie jesiennym mieszkancy swietuja razem swiniobicie, na stol wiezdzaja rozne dania z wyzej wspomnianych zwierzat, jest kaszanka, watrobianka, gotowane mieso, smazone mieso, wszystko podane z kapusta kiszona i chlebem i obficie podlane piwem. Tam gdzie pojechalysmy, cala impreza odbywala sie w remizie strazackiej, biesiada z prawdziwego zdarzenia, przy dlugich lawach. Jest tez stoisko rzeznika, mozna wiec sobie kupic swieze wyroby do domu. Na szczescie byly tez Kaffee und Kuche, jakos przezylam, trauma juz mija. 

I was taken to a vegetarian hell on Sunday, I agreed to it happily, not understanding what the actual event was. My Granny told me we're going out to lunch on Sunday and I will experience some local tradition. We went to next village which hosted joyful gathering called "Metzelsuppe". In the Southern regions of  Germany,  once a year in Autumn people like to celebrate good pig-sticking by having a feast of fried and cooked pork, blood sausage, liver sausage, all served with Sauerkraut and bread and of course accompanied by liters of beer. It was held in fire-station, real village feast. There's also a butcher stall so anyone can bring fresh smelly sausages home. Luckily the Kaffee und Kuche section was well sorted so I survived, trauma slowly easies off.

Katedra

Yesterday I went to Ulm again, this time with intention to climb the highest church tower in the world. Stone stairs leading to the top of 161 meters high tower are very narrow and there are a lot of them, unfortunately we lost the track of counting rather quickly but apparently there's 768 steps to the top. Way up is the same as way down so anytime someone is coming down, the person going up has to hug the wall, one man with a beer belly caused a temporary deadlock;) The first part of spiral stairs is well build up and once that is behind there is wide viewing terrace, just in the place where the square part of tower turns into conical part. In the middle of a castellated stone structure there is another spiral staircase leading to the crown of the tower. Walking up this part was the biggest challenge as that's "see through" and man can really feel the height, the steps are also narrower than earlier and lead to a very marginal viewing platform. It was worth it for the amazing views, even at the cost of momentary dizziness and the muscle pain that's surely coming. I feel that I got a proper adrenaline injection yesterday! 

Wczoraj kolejna wycieczka do Ulm, tym razem z zamiarem wejscia na najwyzsza, 161 metrowa wieze kosciola na swiecie. Kamienne schody prowadzace na gore sa bardzo waskie i jest ich duzo, niestety dosc szybko pogubilysmy sie w liczeniu, podobno jest ich 768. Droga na gore jest tylko jedna i oczywiscie robi sie wesolo, kiedy mija sie schodzacych ludzi, jeden pan z piwnym brzuchem spowodowal chwilowy zastoj ruchu;) Po pokonaniu pierwszej zabudowanej czesci spiralnych stopni dotarlysmy do miejsca, gdzie zaczyna sie stozkowa czesc wienczaca wieze. W srodku azurowej kamiennej konstrukcji znajduja sie kolejne spiralne schody, prowadzace na sam szczyt wiezy. Wedrowka nimi byla najwiekszym wyzwaniem jako, ze nie sa one juz tak dobrze zabudowane i naprawde odczuwa sie wysokosc, sa one rowniez wezsze niz wczesniejsze stopnie i prowadza na bardzo waska platforme widokowa. Warto bylo, dla niesamowitych widokow, nawet kosztem chwilowych zawrotow glowy i nadchodzacych zakwasow. Czuje, ze dostalam wczoraj porzadny zastrzyk adrenaliny!

Federsee

I didn't make it to the biggest lake in the region yet but I made it to Federsee, the second on the list. It can be accessed from few villages but I started from Bad Buchau, town famous for it's thermal springs and large spa gardens. The lake is completely surrounded by wide belt of reeds and it's impossible to access it directly, I had to take a long walk along narrow wooden boardwalk. It was quite something, seeing nothing for good half an hour, I was just able to hear sounds of birds coming from moorland. The area is under protection as at about 250 bird species live there, some of which are endangered species. The name of the lake can be translated as "feather lake" and although not too many species can be seen with naked eye, the feathers cover a lot of the lake surface.

Jeszcze nie udalo mi sie dotrzec nad najwieksze w regionie jezioro, ale odwiedzilam Federsee, drugie najwieksze na liscie. Mozna do niego dotrzec z kilku miasteczek, ja zaczelam z Bad Buchau - znanego z termalnych zrodel i uzdrowisk z pieknymi ogrodami. Jezioro jest calkowicie otoczone szerokim pasem trzcin i zeby dotrzec do wod trzeba przygotowac sie na dlugi spacer waskim drewnianym  pomostem. To jak wedrowka magicznym korytarzem, przez pol godziny niewiele widac, a z kazdego kierunku docieraja do uszu odglosy ptakow. Bagienny obszar wokol jeziora jest pod ochrona, zamieszkuje go ok.250 gatunkow ptakow, niektore z nich sa zagrozonymi gatunkami. Nazwe jeziora mozna tlumaczyc jako "jezioro pior" i pomimo tego, ze niewprawionym golym okiem nie widac izbyt wielu gatunkow ptakow, piora unoszace sie na wodzie mozna dostrzec wszedzie.

Summer time - UK

Although UK wasn't as hot as the continent in summer, it was still a good place for a holiday time. Bournemouth and the coast nearby will always stay close to my heart, the best spot in England by far.

W Anglii nie bylo juz tak goraco jak na kontynencie, ale nie zepsulo to wakacyjnego klimatu. Bournemouth i tamtejsze wybrzeze zawsze beda liski mojemu sercu, najpiekniejsze miejsca w Anglii.

Summer time - Poland

Wakacje w tym roku byly bardzo udane, duzo wolnego czasu, duzo spotkan, radosci, dobrego jedzenia.W Polsce dopisala pogoda, przyjaciele byli na miejscu, rodzina w komplecie - czego mozna chciec wiecej.

This year's holiday were really great, lots of free time, lots of meetings, fun and good food. It was really hot in Poland, all the friends were there, family too - nothig more is needed.
